We all know how much stress mother’s are under when they have a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I see this all the time.
What I found interesting was a study carried out at the University of Wisconsin-Madison investigating stress levels of these mums. Researchers found that the stress hormone levels in these women were disrupted in a similar way to combat soldiers.
These mums have more hours of the day spent in a caring role than mums with kids not on the spectrum. They were more tired and stressed.
In chronic stress, cortisol, the ‘stress’ hormone increases and serotonin and other neurotransmitters decrease. What happens is that long term stress can and often does eventually lead to depression.
We take this really seriously and discuss options available to you. It is so important to care for yourself so your mental and eventually your physical health doesn’t suffer.
- Make time each day for you
- Get help whenever you can
- Connect with your partner or friends without your children
- Make the most of all the amazing times with your child and lastly but most importantly, be gentle with yourself
If you feel you are not able to do this alone, contact us so we can help you get your mind and body back on track fast.
